5 Tips For Taking Better Phone Videos

By Kate and Denny Testa from Little Laughter Films

TURN YOUR CAMERA.

Most people shoot videos on their phones vertically. Flipping the camera around and shooting horizontally will get you a more professional looking video.

CHANGE YOUR SETTINGS.

Most phones and tablets have multiple settings available for video. Most standard settings are set to 24 FPS. But changing that to 60FPS makes for more dynamic footage that our editors can slow down . We like to set ours to 4K at 60FPS.

USE A CONSISTENT LIGHT SOURCE.

Lighting is key to creating professional looking video. Mixing window light with artificial lights can create ugly colors. To fix this turn off all lights in a room and use only the available window light. Play with turning different lights on and off to see the different results.

STABILIZE YOUR SHOTS.

Shaky videos are hard to watch so try and stabilize your videos the best you can. If you have a tripod available, that’s great. However, if you do not simply prop your phone on something and hit record. If you are handholding, try not to remain as still as possible.

START SHOOTING.

The best videos are the ones you have shot not the ones you imagine having. So start filming and have fun. Don’t wait for the perfect environment! Just get out there and capture the moment. The more you shoot, the better you will become.
