#MomCrush Monday Series: Meet Yasmin Maya, Founder of Birdy Lashes

Hispanic Heritage Month takes place September 15 to October 15 every year as a time to recognize and celebrate the many contributions, diverse cultures, and extensive histories of the American Latino/Latina community. With that said, we are interviewing Yasmin Maya, a strong Latina mother, beauty entrepreneur and lifestyle creator – a true force to be reckoned with in the Latinx community.

1.You are a Mompreneur, lifestyle creator, an incredible force in the beauty space and the Founder of Birdy Lashes. I’ve heard you mention that you took a leap of faith at the age of 21 and never looked back. Can you tell us more about this?

As the only girl in the family, I had to learn how to do my makeup on my own. It wasn’t long before I started practicing on my mom and tias. My love for beauty later inspired me to start a YouTube channel. I saw so many other women on the platform and I thought why not start a channel where I can share my tips and tricks on how I do my makeup. They all looked so happy and I wanted to feel like that too. I started recording video tutorials back in 2012 and at the time, I was in Tijuana, Mexico, resolving my papers to become a U.S. resident. So, my beauty channel was a gateway to keep me entertained and busy. Little did I know where it was going to lead me to. With the help of my mother and husband, they supported my dream from afar.

2. Birdy Lashes has helped your journey come full circle. Can you explain how this has happened and what it means to you?

Starting a falsies brand was very intentional for me. When I was in Tijuana, I was in an incident that burned off all of my eyelashes and nearly ruined my face. Since then, I’ve been an avid user of false eyelashes to define my eyes. They not only completed my look, but helped me feel beautiful. I knew how transformative falsies were in my journey to discovering self-confidence again and I wanted to share that feeling with others by creating a falsies brand of my own that was not only high-quality but affordable too.

3. You also use your ever-growing platform as an opportunity to share her pregnancy journey and advice, shed light on motherhood and connect with other Latina moms around the world. What are three things you would like to share with EVERY mom or mom-to-be about motherhood?

First, to expect the unexpected that means in the good and the bad. Second, just because you’re a mother doesn’t mean to stop fighting for your dreams, if not use it as a motivation to keep going. And lastly, it’s okay to not always love the journey. There will be moments when you doubt yourself as a mother but we all get through it, and some way or another, it always passes.

4. You are an entrepreneur, most importantly, a mother, almost a mother of two! Congrats by the way! What tips can you share with other moms about how you juggle it all?

Thank you! I wish I had it all planned but my biggest tip is have a planner! You will not always follow it because sometimes things will get in the way but having that to know where to pick up is always helpful.

5. What is your favorite song lyric? Why?

Un día a la vez, it always makes me cry and at the same time gives me the motivation and strength to continue living one day at a time. We never know how in a blink of an eye how our lives can change so enjoy it while you can.
